I've wondered this for a while.
In modern day Tokyo, the shrine is located at the top of the hill, with the steps leading to it.
The well and Goshinboku are at the top of said hill as well.

In the past, Kaede's hut is at the bottom of the steps, leadin up to the shrine.

Yet in the anime/fanfic, Kagome must go into the woods to get to the well and tree, no steps involved. In the first episode or so, she ran through the rice fields to reach the well/tree, even though she should have run behind Kaede's, up the steps.

What's up with that? It aggrivates me no end. Has anyone ever done a 'map' of the shrine and surrounding areas?

The only steps I really remember were the ones up to the burial place that Kikyo's remains were in. I think the location of the shrine didn't exist. The one during Kikyo's time was burnt down, and because of the poverty of the village, I don't think a new one was built. The shrine was probably moved to the wells location later in time.

I always wondered about the well and tree's proximity to each other as well.

Hmmm, makes sense, I suppose.
Nothing else does.

I'm just one of those who likes visuals
to go along with the story.
